Migraines are intense headaches characterized by pain which is usually concentrated in one area of the head.
Other symptoms include:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Vision changes
- Fatigue
- Sensitivity to light, noise or odor
Migraines are fairly common in the general population. Migraines also are diagnosed in the Veteran population. One study showed that 36% of the service members who had served in Operation Iraqi Freedom had reported migraines compared to 12% in the U.S. civilian population.
Treatments for migraines include:
- Rest
- Avoiding triggering stimuli
- Diet modification
- Medications
- Stress management
