War Related Illness and Injury Study Center
CA WRIISC Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program
Application Information |
Applications are considered yearly for two-year Special Fellowship training programs for MDs and PhDs in Advanced Neuroimaging, Neuroscience, Mental Health and Neuroscience, and Complementary and Alternative Medicine. These fellowships are sponsored by the Office of Academic Affiliations, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The Fellowship site is part of the VA Palo Alto War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (CA WRIISC) and are affiliated with Stanford University.
The CA WRIISC Special Fellowship site is linked to two other WRIISC fellowship sites (Washington, DC and East Orange, NJ) as well as the VA Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC) fellowship program (based at Palo Alto) for didactic, academic, and research efforts.
Fellows will develop and conduct a research project, publish and present findings, participate in grant writing, and utilize the latest technologies for research, educational activities, and clinical service delivery.
The CA WRIISC Special Fellowship Program for Physicians with an interest in Clinical Research and Treatment is an interdisciplinary program that aims to train physicians, with residency training from a broad range of specialties, including but not restricted to neurology, psychiatry, radiology, and internal medicine to become outstanding clinical researchers. Our center specializes in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), memory problems (including dementia) and chronic pain. Individualized, mentored research and clinical training is combined with a state-of-the-art curriculum that emphasizes neuroscience (with a particular emphasis on advanced neuroimaging techniques), mental health systems, quality improvement methods, education and service delivery.
Fellows devote 75% of their time to research and education activities and 25% to clinical training. There is also opportunity to explore projects in psychology and dementia with WRIISC, MIRECC, and Stanford faculty. In collaboration with their mentors, Fellows will develop and conduct a research project, publish and present findings, participate in grant writing, and utilize the latest technologies for research, educational activities, and clinical service delivery.
To be eligible to apply for the WRIISC Fellowship Program, an MD or DO applicant must be able to provide evidence of:
- U.S. citizenship or immigration status (current, unexpired visa and ECFMG [Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates] certificate that is valid indefinitely; or evidence of naturalization or permanent US immigrant status) (Applicants on a J-1 visa must have current ECFMG sponsorship as well.)
- All state medical licenses verified in all states where claimed by applicant Unrestricted and current state medical license (any state)
- Board eligible or board certified
- Completion of education and training (medical school diploma, ACGME [Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education] accredited residency training)
- Other relevant certification (ECFMG or other certifications)

The CA WRIISC Special Fellowship Program in advanced neuroimaging provides Fellows with training in advanced neuroimaging techniques with an emphasis on Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), memory problems (including dementia), and chronic pain. Our center specializes in integrating anatomical/functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) to improve the diagnostic/prognostic value of neuroimaging in the clinical setting. The fellowship provides a unique opportunity to:
- receive training in Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) from a team of experienced neuroimagers and
- relate neuroimaging findings to clinical cases in consensus conferences with our team of neurologists, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists & psychologists.
There is also opportunity to explore projects in psychology and dementia with WRIISC, MIRECC, and Stanford faculty. In collaboration with their mentors, fellows will develop and conduct a research project, publish and present findings, participate in grant writing, and utilize the latest technologies for research (including a brand new 3 Tesla GE MRI scanner).
Applicants must be US citizens. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in cognitive neuroscience, computer science, psychology, or a related discipline. Prior experience in neuroimaging is essential. Experience with Linux, MATLAB, SPM8, FreeSurfer, MedINRIA & FSL is highly desirable and programming skills would be a big plus.

The CA WRIISC Special Fellowship program is an interdisciplinary program that aims to provide clinical psychologists or recent PhD’s in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, or other applicable disciplines with clinical and research training in a broad range of specialties to become outstanding clinical researchers in high priority areas of brain and mental health research. Individualized, mentored research and clinical training is combined with a state-of-the-art curriculum that emphasizes research methods, statistics, epidemiology, neuroscience, mental health systems, quality improvement methods, education, and service delivery.
This fellowship integrates research, education and clinical care while focusing on major areas of study that may include such issues as the cognitive neuroscience of memory, Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), chronic pain, and cognitive impairment. There is also opportunity to explore projects in geropsychology and dementia with WRIISC, MIRECC, and Stanford faculty. We are particularly interested in applying an interdisciplinary approach integrating neuropsychology, and neuroimaging. In collaboration with their mentors, Fellows will develop and conduct a research project, publish and present findings, participate in grant writing, and utilize the latest technologies for research and educational activities.
To be eligible to apply for the WRIISC Fellowship Program, a clinical or non-clinical PhD applicant must be able to provide evidence of US citizenship.

The Office of Academic Affiliations, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is now accepting applications for a two-year VA funded program for researchers (MD or PhD) in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Research. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
The Fellowship site is part of the VA Palo Alto War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (WRIISC) and is affiliated with Stanford University. Accordingly, the Fellow enjoys full access to the rich resources of both institutions. The fellow will focus on rehabilitation research involving yoga and meditation to treat chronic conditions including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and pain. Candidates should have an interest in the mechanisms of action of CAM therapies and in particular how they relate to both mental and physiological factors including; (1) memory consolidation, (2) autonomic nervous system activity, and (3) neuropsychological test performance.
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in analyzing and interpreting cognitive or physiological data. Applications are encouraged from candidates with a background in cognitive neuroscience, psychology, or physiological psychology. Fellows will receive a firm grounding in research issues in CAM, develop and conduct studies that will create the foundation for future treatments, and participate in the development of innovative tools and measurements for novel approaches to healthcare.
Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Informal enquiries prior to submission may be directed to Peter Bayley, PhD at peter.bayley@va.gov.
