Exposure-Related Care Transformation (EXPRT) Center

About VA's Exposure-Related Care Transformation Center

The Exposure-Related Care Transformation (EXPRT) Center, located at the New Jersey War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (NJ WRIISC), was established in 2023. EXPRT's mission is to transform care and improve the health of Veterans with military environmental exposure concerns.

EXPRT focuses on four main activities to achieve this mission:

Our goal is to make sure health issues related to military occupational and environmental exposures are properly addressed for Veterans.

Our Research

Researchers at EXPRT work on improving care for Veterans who have military environmental exposure concerns. Our research looks at the experiences of both Veterans and healthcare providers, develops treatments that Veterans are open to receiving, and finds the best ways to apply these practices in the healthcare system. We aim to make care for military environmental exposures more effective and based on solid evidence. We often publish our findings in scientific journals and present them at national conferences.

Exposure Education

A major part of EXPRT's mission is to educate both healthcare professionals and Veterans about military environmental exposures and the best practices for care. We offer education through monthly live webinars, a certification program for healthcare staff, a podcast series, and informational sheets about environmental exposures. We also provide virtual classes for Veterans. This education ensures Veterans are well-informed and healthcare professionals have the knowledge needed to provide high-quality care.

Implementation

The EXPRT Center is dedicated to helping health care professionals learn how to care for Veterans who have military exposure concerns. EXPRT not only teaches healthcare professionals how to care for these Veterans, but also helps them apply this knowledge in their daily work. EXPRT has created a central place where VA clinicians can find information and resources related to these exposures. They also offer a certification program focused on military environmental exposures, in partnership with the American College of Preventive Medicine. These efforts have sped up the process of turning research and education into practical measures, helping to ensure Veterans get the best possible care for their exposure-related health issues.

Systematic Evaluation

To maintain high-quality and effective services, EXPRT regularly evaluates our research, education, and implementation activities. We assess the quality and impact of our educational programs, evaluate Veterans' trust in VA care for environmental exposures, and conduct regular assessments to meet the needs of Veterans and healthcare professionals.
