What happens when I am referred to the CA WRIISC
After you have been referred to the CA WRIISC program located at the VA medical center in Palo Alto, California our team of clinicians will conduct a thorough review of your medical records. We will review your medical history to determine if:
- You've had diagnositic testing related to the current complaint at your local VA
- You do not currently have a substance abuse problem (some home tobacco and alcohol usage is OK but not while you are in our program because it may interfere with the diagnostic tests)
- You are fit to travel to the Palo Alto VA - either unassisted or with a companion
When you are given the OK to participate in our program we will contact you about setting up a 4-day visit to our facility.
Living Arrangements
Veterans will stay at the new Lee and Penny Anderson Defenders Lodge located at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Palo Alto, California. The Defenders Lodge replaces the Hometel and serves as a free hotel for veterans undergoing medical care at the VA Palo Alto Medical Center. It a high-quality, warm and inviting environment for Veterans and their families. It is located next to the Fisher House, sharing a common garden area in between. For a video tour and more information about the Defenders Lodge please visit the Lee and Penny Anderson Defenders Lodge video tour on Youtube.com.
What to pack for the visit
Your days will be filled with doctor's appointments or tests so bring comfortable clothes and good walking shoes. There is exercise equipment that you may use if you wish so bring workout clothes if you wish. The hospital is not within walking distance of restaurants, shopping or entertainment so bring books, music or other recreational material for yourself. We have compiled a packing list for your convenience.
Complementary & Alternative Medicine
The CA WRIISC offers yoga and tai chi to our local Veterans. While you are here for your evaluation, you are welcome to participate in these classes if it fits in with your clinical evaluation schedule. Many Veterans participate in the yoga class offered each Monday at 3pm and find it enjoyable and relaxing after a full day of travel. There are additional classes for you to enjoy.
