Education Offerings at DC WRIISC

What Classes Are Offered?

Our goal is to make sure Veterans who have deployment related health concerns receive the most up to date information and education about their post-deployment health concerns. Currently, we are offering telehealth exposure classes that cover a variety of important deployment health topics. More information on these telehealth classes is listed here. Traditionally, we offer group classes that are led by a DC WRIISC nurse educator.
These classes cover a variety of topics including:

  • Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn Military Exposure Concerns

  • Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm Military Exposure Concerns

  • Vietnam War and Agent Orange Military Exposure Concerns

Currently, these group classes are on hold pending the pandemic restrictions. We encourage Veterans to participate in our telehealth exposure classes to learn more about deployment environmental exposures.

  • Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn Military Exposure Concerns Class: Provides an overview of the history and potential exposures during these conflicts. Discusses potential health effects, VA health care resources, and other VA resources.

  • Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm Military Exposure Concerns Class: Provides an overview of the history and potential exposures during these conflicts. Discusses potential health effects, VA health care resources, and other VA resources.

  • Vietnam War and Agent Orange Military Exposure Concerns Class: Provides an overview of the history and potential exposures during this conflict. Discusses Agent Orange including what it is and where and when it was used. Discusses potential health effects, VA health care resources, and other VA resources.

Am I Eligible For These Classes?

  • Combat Veterans who have deployment-related health concern are eligible to attend our classes. Please ask your VA primary care provider to submit a WRIISC referral outlining your environmental exposure concerns. More information on WRIISC referral listed here . If you are interested in our telehealth exposure classes, please see our schedule here. Health care providers, families, significant others, and students also are welcome to attend these telehealth classes.

When Are The Classes?

  • When in-person group classes resume, they are typically held on Fridays. The monthly schedule of these classes does change. Please contact our Administrative Office at (202) 745-8249 to receive the latest class information.

Where Are The Classes?

  • Veterans can participate in tele-health classes from their home. When in-person group classes resume, these classes are held at the Washington, DC VA Medical Center. Veterans are asked to report to room 3B 203 to register prior to the class.

  • Community service organization groups and Veterans service representatives often ask DC WRIISC staff to do education at locations throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area. If you are a health care provider or community service organization interested in this option, please call our Administrative Office at 1-202-745-8249 to discuss this with DC WRIISC staff
